Phoenix Natural Gas (PNG) offers a rotating set of connection grants and seasonal promotions to homeowners switching from oil, solid fuel or electric heating to natural gas. They’re not a single fixed scheme: offers change quarterly, by postcode, and by household type.
This is the 2026 map of what is typically available, and how it fits with the boiler cost now that the NIHE Boiler Replacement Scheme has closed.
Important: we are not a Phoenix Natural Gas approved installer. This guide is informational. You apply for the connection directly with PNG. We handle the gas boiler work from the meter inward.
What PNG grants cover
The grants typically cover the connection cost: the pipework from the PNG street main to your external meter box. Standard connection is £400-£1,200 depending on distance from the main.
Grants don’t normally cover:
- The boiler itself (separate, and no longer grant-funded for most households, see Boiler Grants Northern Ireland)
- Internal gas pipework from the meter to the boiler
- System flush or tank removal
- Appliances other than the heating boiler

Offers are strongest in spring and summer (PNG smooths winter installation demand by incentivising early-year switches).
How to check what you qualify for

- Enter your postcode to confirm PNG network coverage
- Run the grant calculator (usually a 3-question form: current fuel, property type, income band)
- Request a connection quote
Connection quotes are free and typically come back in 3-7 working days.
What about a boiler grant on top?
This is where the picture has changed, and a lot of pages have not caught up.
A PNG connection offer covers the gas supply connection. It has never covered the boiler. The boiler side used to be funded by the NIHE Boiler Replacement Scheme, but that scheme closed to new applications on 21 September 2023.
So in 2026:
- PNG connection offer: still available where one is running and your address is in network
- Boiler cost: paid privately, unless you qualify for Affordable Warmth (gross household income under £23,000)

Timing the application
Order matters. Recommended sequence:
- Check PNG network coverage at your address (free, 2 minutes online)
- Apply for the PNG connection with any active offer (takes 3-8 weeks to install)
- If your household income is under £23,000, contact your council’s Affordable Warmth team in parallel
- Book the engineer once you know which route applies
- Install runs once PNG have the meter in
Do not start the boiler install until PNG have completed the supply connection. The meter needs to be in place before any internal work can happen.
Who we are and what we do
We are an introducer service. We connect homeowners with independent Gas Safe and OFTEC registered engineers across Belfast, Lisburn, Newtownabbey, Bangor and the surrounding 20-mile radius. On an oil-to-gas conversion the engineer’s scope is:
- New combi or system boiler
- Internal gas pipework from meter to boiler
- Flue run, filter, inhibitor
- System flush
- Oil tank decommissioning and removal
- Building control notification and Gas Safe cert
PNG handle the supply. The engineer holds the contract for the work inside the house and carries the warranty. We are not a Phoenix Natural Gas approved installer and we do not administer any grant scheme.

If you’re outside the PNG network
Natural gas isn’t available. Options:
- Stay on oil with an annual oil boiler service and newer condensing oil boiler
- LPG, which has its own network considerations and different grants
- Air source heat pump, covered under separate schemes
