What Is a Power Flush? (Plain English Guide)

A power flush in plain English: what it does, why your heating system needs one, what it costs (£380-£680 Belfast), how long it takes, and whether DIY is possible.

A power flush is the deep clean of a wet central heating system. A high-flow pump forces a chemical cleaner through every radiator, every pipe and the boiler heat exchanger, breaking up the sludge and scale that builds up over years. Dirty water goes out to drain, clean water comes in, and the system is dosed with an inhibitor to stop the whole thing starting again.

Done on a 10-year-old system, it typically restores heat output, eliminates cold-bottom radiators and quietens a kettling boiler. Done on a new-boiler install, it’s usually a warranty requirement.

Why systems need flushing

Central heating water isn’t fresh drinking water. It circulates the same 30-80 litres round and round for years. Over time:

  • Iron radiators slowly rust from the inside (black magnetite sludge)
  • Limescale builds up (in Belfast we’re in a soft water area, so less of a problem than in the south-east)
  • Air gets in, accelerating corrosion
  • Flux residues from old pipe joints dissolve into the water

Result: sludge, settling at the low points (radiator bottoms, pump body, heat exchanger).

What a power flush actually does

Three things:

  1. Agitation. A dedicated pump pushes water at much higher velocity than the system’s own pump, in both directions through each radiator. Sludge that has settled gets lifted.
  2. Chemical treatment. A cleaner (typically Fernox DS40, Sentinel X400 or similar) dissolves and suspends the corrosion products. Circulates for 30-60 minutes.
  3. Discharge and refill. Dirty water flushed out to drain. Clean water drawn in. Repeated until discharge runs clear.

Finally, the system is dosed with an inhibitor (Fernox F1, Sentinel X100) to prevent future corrosion.

What it doesn’t do

  • Fix a failed pump
  • Fix a leaking radiator
  • Replace corroded pipework
  • Repair a broken boiler
  • Work on lime-scaled heat exchangers (those need descaling, which is different)

If any of these are present, they need fixing separately. See Boiler Repair or Radiator Installation.

How long does it take

6-9 hours on site for a standard 3-bed Belfast home. Layout:

  • Arrive 8am, set up (drop cloths, waste containment, tool out)
  • Connect power flush pump to the system
  • Drain down existing system water (1 hour)
  • Add chemical cleaner, circulate (1 hour)
  • Flush each radiator individually with pump cycles (3-4 hours depending on radiator count)
  • Final rinse, clean water fill (1 hour)
  • Add inhibitor, pressure test, leak check, flow test (30 min)

You don’t need to move out. The system is off for the duration. Expect a cold house on the day but warm by evening.

Cost in Belfast

£380-£680 depending on radiator count and condition. Full breakdown: Power flush cost in Belfast.

Can I DIY a power flush?

Short answer: no. Longer answer:

  • The equipment costs £1,500+ (dedicated flush pump + tanks) to buy, or £80-£120/day to hire
  • The chemicals need correct dosing (too strong damages joints, too weak doesn’t clean)
  • Improper pressure can burst old joints or rupture an expansion vessel
  • Old pipework especially needs careful handling

You CAN do a “DIY chemical flush” (pour in a cleaner, run the heating for a week, drain and refill). It’s gentler, less effective, and fine as a preventive measure on a healthy system. It won’t fix a genuinely sludged system.

See How to power flush radiators for the honest DIY assessment.

Do you need one?

Signs your system does:

  • Radiators cold at the bottom
  • Kettling from the boiler
  • Dark water when you bleed rads
  • Parts of the house heat slower than others
  • New boiler being fitted on an old system (warranty requirement)

Signs it’s NOT needed:

  • Under 5 years old
  • No cold rads, no noise, all balanced
  • Bright-ish water when you bleed
  • Inhibitor recently dosed
